LITERARY INTELLIGENCE.

HINDU TRIBES AND CASTES.-The third and concluding volume of the late Rev. M. A. Sherring's work on "Hindu Tribes and Castes" has just reached us; it contains three dissertations on the subject and a general index to the three volumes. The author thinks that the caste laws, which rule the Hindus with a Draconian severity, have been of gradual growth, as from the Code of Manu we find that under certain restrictions a Brahmin could legally marry a Sudra, but such freedom has long since passed away. There is very little doubt that the system of caste was originated by Brahmins, and has been carefully fostered by them; it remains to be seen if it will survive the opposition of European influences, as it did the irruption of Buddhism, which at one time shook it to its foundations.

BUDDHIST CATECHISM.-Messrs. Trübner and Co. will publish at an early date the English version of a Buddhist Catechism, composed by H. S. Olcott, of Bombay, and revised by one of the best scholars among the Buddhist Priests of Ceylon, whose certificate of orthodoxy it will bear.

SANSKRIT MANUSCRIPTS.-We have received from Allahabad the fifth part of the "Catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts in the North-Western Provinces." Compiled by Order of Government N.W.P. One volume of 208 pages in 8vo. And also from the same place, is a Catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts in Oudh. Prepared by Pandit Deri Prasada. Fasc. XII. 8vo. pp. 55.

After passing a vote of thanks to the American Academy for the use of its room, the Society adjourned until Wednesday, Oct. 26th, 1881.

BIBLICAL AND ORIENTAL MSS.-The British Museum has recently purchased a collection of 40 manuscripts made in Southern Arabia. Fifteen of these are portions of the Hebrew Scriptures, and two of them are probably the oldest which have as yet come to light. One of the fifteen contains the Hagiographa, exhibiting a recension of the Hebrew text, and forming with the other two portions already in the Museum Library the complete Hebrew Bible. Twenty-five of the MSS. are Midrashim, or homiletic commentaries and liturgies, some contain Arabic translations of Suadiah in alternate verses with the Hebrew, and others have the Assyrian vowel points. The whole of these MSS. are valuable authorities for Biblical students and critics.

THE NUMIDIAN LANGUAGE.-In the time of St. Augustine, the Libyan Language, as known to the Romans among Numidians, Mauritanians and Gætulians, was essentially one. Hence some approximation can be made towards its reconstruction by casting out of the modern tongues which are spoken on the same area all the imported Arabic. An

attempt is made to present thus the materials of a Libyss Dictionary. It is expected that there will be about 250 pages. Price 10s. Orders are solicited, from those who are interested in recovering ancient languages, and Prospectus and Specimen will be sent, by Trübner & Co., 57 and 59 Ludgate Hill, London.

THE DANTE SOCIETY.-The Dante Society, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, proposes to print the hitherto inedited Latin Comment on the Divine Comedy by Benvenuto da Imola. The importance of the Comment is well known. Composed in the early part of the fourth quarter of the fourteenth century, little more than fifty years after the death of Dante, by a man of knowledge of the world as well as of books, versed in the personal and political history of the preceding century, a friend of Boccacio, and himself one of the chief men of letters of his time, it contains a larger amount of information concerning the conditions of Italy and the personages mentioned in the poem than will be found in any other of the early co ments, and is of such value as an historical document that Muratori, in 1738, in the first volume of his Antiquitste Italica Medii Evi, published large excerpts from it. Th portion thus published included very little of the verbal and philosophical interpretation of the poem. A pretended Italian translation, mutilating and misrepresenting the original in the grossest manner, appeared at Imola in 1855-56. No version, however trustworthy, can satisfactorily supply the place of the original for the use of scholars. The publication of the Latin text in its integrity will provide students of the poem with the most important contribution to the interpretation of it that remains to be made from the fourteenth century. An exact copy of the manuscript now in the Libreria Laurenziana in Florence having been procured, it is proposed to issue the work in three handsome octave volumes, of about 500 pages each, provided that a sufficient number of subscribers can be obtained to defray the expenses of printing it. The price of each volume will be one Guinea, to be paid on delivery. Should the requisite number of subscribers be secured, it will be the hope of the Dante Society to issue the first volume before the end of 1882. The work will be published by Messrs. James R. Osgood and Co., of Boston. The names of subscribers may be sent to Mr. Justin Winsor, Librarian of Harvard College, or to Mr. John Woodbury, Secretary of the Dante Society, Cambridge, Mass., or to the publishers. In Europe, Messrs. Trübner & Co., London, will receive the names of subscribers.

REFORMISTAS ESPAÑOLES.-Two volumes of a second series of the above, respectively entitled "El Salterio traduzido del Hebreo en Romance castellano por Juan de Valdes" and "Trataditos de Juan de Valdes," both edited by Dr. Boehmer, have just been issued for private circulation only. The editor of the first series was Don Luiz Usoz y Rio. A reprint of Dr. Constantino Ponce de la Fuente's Sermons on the First Psalm, published in 1550, is in active preparation, under the editorship of Dr. Boehmer, and will form part of the second series of the "Reformistas." Mr. Betts has translated the letters of the "Trataditos" from the Spanish, and the "Cinque Tratatelli." These, with the prefatory letters appended by Valdes to his commentaries on the Psalms, on the Epistles to the Romans and Corinthians (I.), will form a handsome small volume under the title of " Opuscules by Juan de Valdes," and be published by Trübner & Co. Mr. Betts is actually engaged on the translation of Valdes' commentary on the Gospel of St. Matthew, the manuscript of which was discovered at Vienna with the letters of the " "Trataditos and 39 of the "CX. Consideraciones" and one of the "Tratatelli" in Spanish.

GENERAL BARTOLOMÉ MITRE.-We have received from the above distinguished General, Statesman and Scholar a pamphlet written by him, which is worthy the attention of European scholars. The title is "Ollantay: Estudio sobre el Drama Quechua" (Buenos Ayres, 1881). General Mitre

examines in this pamphlet the views of Rivero, Tschudi, Barranca, Markham, Lopez y Pacheco Zegarra and Nodal, respecting the authenticity of the Drama in question, and arrives at the conclusion that the "Ollantay" is essentially a European and genuinely Spanish Drama.

En Memoriam.

SHARPE. On the 28th of July died Mr. Samuel Sharpe, aged 83 years. On his retirement from the banking business, in which he was engaged in early life, he took up the study of Egyptology and Biblical matters. He was a self-taught man, but has left his mark in the subjects he took up, though his want of knowledge of the German research in Biblical matters often led him to wrong conclusions. His chief works were a History of Egypt, a translation of the New Testament from the text of Griesbach, a Hebrew Grammar, without points, and a revised translation of the Old Testament. The deceased gentleman was a nephew of Samuel Rogers the poet.

APPLETON.-It is with regret we record the death of John

Adams Appleton, the second son of the late Daniel Appleton, the founder of the firm of D. Appleton and Co. Mr. J. A. Appleton was born on January 9th, 1817, at Boston, Mass., and was educated at Andover in the same State. In 1848 he became a member of the firm, in which position, through his urbanity and integrity, he won the respect of all who had business relations with the house.

DORN.-Professor B. A. von Dorn, Councillor of State, and Librarian of the Imperial Library at St. Petersburg, died in that City. This eminent Orientalist for some time held the Professorship of Oriental Languages in the University of Charkov, and of Asiatic History and Geography in the University of St. Petersburg.
