Englische Sprach- und Literaturdenkmale des 16. 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts, herausgegeben von Karl Vollmöller. No. 1, Gorboduc or Ferrex and Porrex, a tragedy by Thomas Norton and Thomas Sackville, A.D. 1561. Edited by L. Toulmin Smith. Svo. sewed, pp. xxix. and 97. Heilbronn, 1883.

This is No. 1 of a collection of Reprints of scarce English works-in prose and poetry-of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, in their original form, with critical and explanatory notes and introductions. The very unsatisfactory custom of curtailing and arranging old works in order to adapt them to the tastes of modern readers has convinced Messrs. Henninger Brothers that literal reprints of interesting old books, accompanied, of course, by the necessary explanations in shape of notes and introductions, would be much appreciated by students. We have noticed their valuable reprints of important old German works on previous occasions (RECORD, No. 169-70 p. 169, and No. 177-80 p. 162). They have also commenced a collection of reprints of old French works, and they now announce in connexion with the above a series of reprints of works of the earliest English Literature. The next to follow Norton and Sackville's Tragedy of Gorboduc will be: Marlowe, Doctor Faustus, and Edward the Second; Gay, Beggar's Opera and Polly; Mountford, Life and Death of Doctor Faustus; John Lyly, Euphues, the Anatomy of Wit; and Ben Jonson's works, etc.

Dr. Oesterley gave a full account of the plan and arrangement of ha new work in a late number of "Petermann's Geographische Mittbe lungen." The articles are classified under the modern names, 4 cross-references are given to them from the different mediæval term Compound names are always to be found under the chief word; therefore towns and villages, the names of which begin with "Gros** or "Klein," "Ober," " 996. Unter," "Nord,” “Süd," "Alt,” “Net," etc., are registered under the second word, except when they are merely compounds of words like "Dorf," " Stadt," "Au," "Bert," "Thal," etc. We find, for instance, under, "Edlitz' both "C" and "Nied-Edlitz," under "Garbach," "Gross-,"" Klein-," "Neck Garbach," under "Hollwede," "Oster-" and "Mühlen-Holl etc. Where the author could not identify an old name of tot r village with any modern place, he added ["unbekannt"] and b he could only guess at an identification ["ungewiss"]. The sys of omitting not even the smallest place which occurs-possibly er only once-in medieval literature necessitated a certain uneven in the compilation; for it would have been practically impossib quote every mention of many larger places. We owe great thank the compiler for all the trouble he has taken and the excellent ser he has rendered to all students of medieval German liter He has, in the case of every place-name, stated his authors with the most conscientious care, and he tells us that he arrangi 80,000 slips. The book is well printed, and will surely find may buyers in England. All preceding works on the same subject-szi as: "Europa latina, od. alphabet. Schiller (Herm.) - Geschichte der Römischen Kaiserzeit. Erster Band. I. Abtheilung: Von Caesars Tod bis zur Erhebung Vespasians. 8vo. sewed, pp. and 496. Gotha, 1883. 9s.

It is almost 200 years ago that Tillemont wrote his comprehensive work on the Roman Empire. Since then a large amount of study has been devoted to the history of that period, and many important discoveries have been made. But they have been comparatively useless to the public and the student, being scattered over many small pamphlets and magazines, uncollected and unrecorded. Mr. Schiller has studied this vast literature very carefully, and gives & in the above-named work a safe guide to all the hidden treasures which have thus accumulated. But that is not all; he has added the results of his own studies, which are of the most valuable kind. His work will be heartily welcomed by all engaged in the study of the times of Roman greatness and decline. The first part of Vol. I. comprises the history of the time from Cæsar's death to the accession of Vespasian; Part II. is to be published immediately and the second volume will follow in about two years.

"The letters are all well worth reading, giving the honest and independent thought of a strong and cultivated mind upon ariety of important topics in politics, history and literature. Slavery and later on Secession naturally occupy much space; d the discussion of these subjects together with other important questions of the time by a foreigner, although one who had come a naturalized American citizen, gives them a peculiar interest; for Lieber's opinions generally carry with them an air impartiality such as belongs to a spectator rather than to an actual combatant."--The Saturday Review.

"Lieber follows American history for almost half a century of its most interesting period."-Hartford Courant.

"His correspondents included some of the most eminent men of his time, and whatever subject he discussed—politics, blic affairs, social topics, literature, history-he brought to it a mind singularly luminous and well informed, and a very candid mper. One finds, therefore, in his letters a variety and range which are quite unusual, and a wealth of thought and suggestion hich makes them very profitable and fruitful reading."-Boston Journal.

"Fully to appreciate the works of such a character as Dr. Lieber, one should know the man himself, the motives and aims hat inspired him, and the conditions and circumstances under which he wrote. This knowledge is copiously revealed in the just ublished Life and Letters.. The volume has been skillfully edited by Mr. Perry. He has judiciously arranged the aterials in his hands so that Dr. Lieber tells his own story in his own words. It is one of the most interesting and instructive iographies that have issued from the press in many years-alike rich in charming glimpses of men and things, and in food for hought."-Harper's New Monthly Magazine.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA.

INDIA is rapidly increasing in interest, not only to statesmen, merchants, and manufacturers, but also to tourists and artists, as well as to students of natural history and philology, and every branch of antiquarian research. Being the cradle and home of some of the most remarkable religious developments still holding sway over by far the greater part of the vast population of Asia, a knowledge of Indian literature, history, and art has become an interesting study to the general reader as well as to the Orientalist.

It has long been recognised that the Ancient Monuments of India are tangible embodiments of the ideas of their builders, and of the age to which they belong; as such they deserve careful attention, and are full of instruction in ther various relations to architecture, sculpture, religion, and history. Comparative palæography and architecture render invaluable aid in arranging these remains in chronological order, and thus making them tell the history of Indian 11 and of the ideas it embodies.

The illustration of Indian Architecture, especially as exhibited in the numerous and often elaborately sculptured Cave Temples of the Buddhists, Brahmans, and Jains, and other antiquities of Peninsular India, is now being systematically carried out by the Archæological Survey, instituted in 1870, in the various Presidencies of India, and t part of it conducted by Mr. Burgess in Western India is made accessible in the following works, published by authority of Her Majesty's Secretary of State for India in Council.
