Late political events have certainly roused a lively interest in Germany for Spain and the Spanish. It can therefore hardly be considered rash, if we predict a great succes for this book. In a series of fifteen well-written essays the author, who lives at Madrid, draws a complete and true picture of Spanish habits and culture at the present day. And we believe that the greater part of this pleasant book will also interest English readers, particularly those who have visited Spain or intend to do so. It is written in a very readable style. Ein Handbuch für Haus, Schule und Werkstätte. 8vo. cloth extra, gilt edges, with 1 coloured plate and many cuts, pp. viii. and 476. Stuttgart, n.d. (1884). 12s.

This is a charming book, charming inside and out. On opening a tasteful, richly-gilt cloth cover, we discover opposite the title-page an exquisite plate printed in light and dainty colours and representing a crystal jug with gold and enamelled ornaments. Interspersed in the text, which is beautifully printed on slightly tinted paper, are numerous cuts, which are without exception well executed. The book is written in Prof. Falke's best style, elevated and even on the driest topics interesting. After a short explanatory introduction on industrial art he gives a historical survey of industrial art and of taste in art. Then follow "general aesthetic principles in industrial art," and finally a review of the different branches of industrial art, viz. terracotta-faience-china-glass-iron-bronze-silver and gold-jewels-enamel-furniture-mosaics-leather work and bookbinding-textils-embroidery and lace. We can strongly recommend this book to every one and are convinced that ladies in particular will find it useful and agreeable reading.

We congratulate Mr. Fenzi on his successful rendering into English of several of the most difficult poems, written in the Italian language. His verses run very smoothly and we see no reason for his charming modesty when he says in his preface: "I do not suppose that I have quite succeeded in rendering the words and thoughts of the Italian authors, in verses noble enough to do them justice; but I trust that what I have done, may induce some English writer to take up the task and furnish the British public with a better idea of what some of our recent best poets have sung in this the land of Poetry and Art."

This is a new addition to the learned Dr. J. Platzmann's already extensive series of faithful reprints of interesting old grammars and dictionaries of South American languages. The lengthy title of the original, which is here literally and accurately reproduced, runa as follows: "Chilidúgu sive res Chilenses vel descriptio status tem naturalis, tum civilis, cum moralis Regni populique Chilensis, inserta suis locis perfectae ad Chilensem linguam Manuductioni, Deo 0. M. multis ac miris modis jurante opera, sumptibus, periculisque Bernard Havestadt, Agrippinensis quondam provinciae Rheni Inferiors primum Horstmariae in Westphalia, deinde in Americae Meridionals Regno Chilensi e Societate Jesu Missionarii. Jesu Missionarius " The work is divided into seven parts, of which the first is an elaborate grammar of the Chilian tongue, the fourth an ample vocabulary, with which the fifth-a Latin Vocabulary-corresponds. The author was for 20 years a Jesuit missionary in Chili. (Vide Trübner's Bibliotheca Glottica, p. 11.) Hellwald (F. v.) — Kulturgeschichte in ihrer natürlichen Entwicklung bis zur Gegenwart. The Eilenriede is a large forest extending east of Hannover. Its history is crowded with memorable events, which are not merely chronicled, but charmingly related in this neatly printed and got up little book. Prefixed is a poem in six stanzas by Werner Bergmann and added at the end are two well drawn maps of the neighbourhood. Katscher (L.)-Charakterbilder aus dem neunzehnten Jahrhundert. Biographisch-kritische Essais. 8vo. sewed, pp. 330. Berlin, 1884. 6s.

This is a collected edition of the biographical sketches of the clever German essayist. Of the nine essays included in this volume four treat on celebrated women and five on men of the nineteenth century, viz. George Sand - George Eliot Charlotte Bronte - Harriet Martineau-H. Taine-A de Musset-H. Thom. Buckle-Charles Bradlaugh-Andersen. There is much in this book which is of interest to English readers, and the essay on Mr. Bradlangh in par ticular contains matter which can only have been derived from personal communications.
