Lewis (J. D.)-Les Causes célèbres de l'Angleterre.

Troisième édition. 8vo. sewed, pp. 358. Paris, 1884. 3s. 6d. This is a very meritorious little book, which has been much appreciated on the other side of the Channel. It gives a short account of the most celebrated English trials, the nature of which has-with exception perhaps of the poisoning case of William Palmer-up to the present been unknown to the French public. Mr. Lewis's style is smooth and pleasing, and he tells his tales in an agreeable, chatty manner. It must be observed that Mr. J. D. Lewis, our former member for Davenport, has himself composed the articles in French, which adds to the interest of the publication.

Author of "The Occult World," President of the Simla Eclectic Theosophical Society.

"Mr. Sinnett delivers his gospel with much clearness and obvious good faith."—Saturday Review.

"We have carefully read Mr. Sinnett's 'Esoteric Buddhism,' and we strongly recommend all who take any interest in transcendental speculation to do the same. It is one of those fascinating books which defy you to lay them down after you've once begun, or to forget after you've once read them. It falls in so well with that craving for certainty about the after life which is felt all the more widely now that so many are deeply dissatisfied with the popular conceptions of heaven and hell. Not till one has read many chapters does one pause to ask how Mr. Sinnett came to know all this. In his former book, 'Occult World,' he answered this question at length. Here he merely states the fact that certain masters of occult science, both in Tibet and in Southern India, felt the world was ripe for the disclosures which he has been commissioned to make."The Graphic.

A Remarkable Record of Experience and Research in connection with the Occult Science of the East.

"Mr. Sinnett's book is intensely interesting to all persons who can think. It is brightly, lucidly, logically written; cool headed, perfectly dispassionate."-The Medium and Daybreak.

"The philosophy that it contains is clearly stated, and affords rich material for thought. The facts recorded are set forth with scientific accuracy, and must profoundly impress the careful and candid reader."—Light.

"The author, who evidently in perfect faith makes such astounding statements, is a man of exceptional ability and unquestionable integrity."- Vanity Fair.

"This is an excellent work, that shows the real nature of the Hindoo adepts who for centuries past have wielded the sceptre of occultism in India."—Public Opinion.

The book starts a host of vague speculations in the mind of the reader, and startles and fascinates him."-Home News. "The author is true to his convictions, and has taken a bold and honest stand upon them before the public."—Spiritualist.

"The Translators have done their work, as far as we have examined it, with very great care. They have adhered closely to the original text, with some loss of elegance as a necessary consequence, but with advantage to the student of Schopenhauer's mind. The translators deserve all praise for the general style of their most difficult work."-Times. "The result is a piece of work which is not only accurate in a rare degree as regards the rendering of philosophical terms, but which avoids the clumsiness of style which usually clings to a translation.”—Bookseller.

By CHARLES JOHN PLUMPTRE,

Lecturer on Public Reading and Speaking at King's College, London, in the Evening Classes Department.

Dedicated by permission to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales.

"The book is sound, sensible, and interesting; and though the many examples must have had naturally much greater weight when delivered viva voce, students of the English language and of elocution cannot fail to gather many valuable suggestions."-The Westminster Review.

[ocr errors]

'Mr. Plumptre has established a reputation as our best living teacher of elocution, and he has counted among his pupils many of the most distinguished preachers and speakers of the time. He has embodied in this volume the results of his long and large experience, and it is by far the most useful and practical treatise on the important art of elocution that our language possesses.' The Queen.

"This, although not a law-book, is a book for lawyers.

"We have great pleasure in rendering our unqualified praise both of the style and composition of this very useful work.”— The Era. Mr. Plumptre speaks with the authority of a professor, and he appears to understand his subject entirely, and in all its different branches. We commend it heartily alike to those who aspire to become orators in parliament, to the clergy, and to the bar."-Quarterly Law Review.
