DISTINGUISHED GENERALS OF THE CONFEDERATE ARMY.
General Robert E. Lee, one of the greatest military leaders America has produced
and famous also for his learning and magnanimity. Born January 19, 1807; died October 12, 1870.
Major-General Thomas Jonathan (Stonewall) Jackson, the brave and Christian
soldier of ma terly military genius. Born January 21. 1824 ; Died May 10, 1863.
Major-General Joseph E. Johnston, the hero of several wars and commander
of the Confederate forces at the first battle of Born February 3, 1807; died March 21, 1891.
Major-General John Bell Hood, who fought valorously at Gaines' Mill, Gettysburg,
and on other battlefields. He succeeded Johuston, and was in turn succeeded by General Taylor. Born June 1, 1531; died August 30, 1879.
Major-General Braxton Bragg distinguished himself at Buena Vista. After Shiloh,
he succeeded Beauregard in command of the Western division. Victorious at Chickamaugs, and fought Grant before Chattanooga. Born March 22, 1817 ; died September 27, 1876.
Major-General James Longstreet, renowned as a hard fighter and a hero on
muany bloody battletields. Held various offices in the customs service, and was appointed Minister to Turkey by Hayes. Born January 8, 1821 ;
