CLXXX. Divine Teaching. C. M. HE spirit breaths upon the word, And brings the truth to fight: Precepts and promises afford, A fanctifying light.

[ocr errors]

A glory gilds the facred page,
Majeftic like the fun;
It gives a light to ev'ry age,
It gives, but borrows none.

The hand that gave it, ftill fupplies
The gracious light, and heat;
His truths upon the nations rife,
They rife, but never fet.

Let everlasting thanks be thine!
For fuch a bright difplay,

As makes a world of darknefs fhine,

With beams of heav'nly day.

T 4

My foul rejoices to purfue,
The fteps of him I love;

Till glory breaks upon my view,
And brighter worlds above.

CLXXXI. The Scriptures. C. M.

ATHER of mercies, in thy word,
What endless glories fhine?

FA

For ever be thy name ador'd,

For thefe celeftial lines.

Here, may the wretched fons of want,
Exhaufflefs riches find;

Riches above what earth can grant,
And lafting as the mind,

Here, the fair tree of knowledge grows,
And yields a free repast;
Sublimer fweets than nature knows,
Invite the longing taste.

Here, the REDEEM ER's welcome voice,..
Spreads heav'nly peace around:
And life, and everlafting joys,
Attend the blissful found.

O may these heav'nly pages be,
My ever dear delight;

And ftill new beauties may I fee,
And ftill increafing light.

Divine inftructor, gracious LORD,
Be thou for ever near,
Teach me to love thy facred word,
And view my SAVIOR there.

CLXXXII. Hardness of Heart. L. M.
H! for a glance of heav'nly day,

To take this ftubborn ftone away;
And thaw with beams of love divine,
This heart, this frozen heart of mine.

The rocks can rend, the earth can quake,
The feas can roar, the mountains shake;
Of feeling, all things fhew fome fign,
But this unfeeling heart of mine.

To hear the forrows thou haft felt,
Dear LORD, an-adament would melt
But I can read each moving line,
And nothing move this heart of mine.
Thy judgments too, unmov'd I hear,
(Amazing thought) which devils fear,
Goodnefs, and wrath, in vain combine,
To ftir this ftupid heart of mine.

But fomething yet, can do the deed,
And that dear fomething, much I need ;
Thy fpirit can from drofs refine,
And move, and melt this heart of mine.

CLXXXIII. Remember me. C. M.
Thou, from whom all goodness flows,
I lift my heart to thee;

In all my forrows, conflicts, woes,
Dear LORD, remember me.

When groaning on my burden'd heart,
My fins lie heavily;

My pardon fpeak, new peace impart,
In love, remember me.

Temptations fore obftruct my way,
And ills I cannot flee;

O give me ftrength, LORD, as my day,
For good, remember me.

If on my face, for thy dear name,
Shame, and reproaches be;

All hail reproach, and welcome fhame,
If thou remember me.
