South Italians follow with a slightly smaller percentage, while Germans show the lowest per cent of husbands having wives abroad. Russian Hebrews, Poles, South Italians, Lithuanians, and Germans show between 30 and 40 per cent having wives abroad, while Magyars and Bohemians and Moravians show slightly over 25 per cent having wives in Europe. Among husbands who have been in the United States from five to nine years, Russian Hebrews show over 50 per cent having wives abroad and Bohemians and Moravians slightly over 1 per cent. Among husbands with a residence of ten years or over, Hebrews other than Russian show the highest per cent and Magyars and Russians no husbands having wives in Europe.

In the preceding table the males show a greater percentage making visits abroad during the first and second periods, and the females show the greater percentage in the third period. The South Italians show the highest percentage of visits abroad for the males, followed by the North Italians, while the lowest percentage is shown by the Russians. The Bohemians and Moravians are the only races in this group showing a greater percentage of visits abroad during the first period than either the second or third periods. The highest percentage of visits abroad of the females is shown by the North Italians, followed by the Poles, while the lowest percentage is reported by the Russian Hebrews. In this group no Germans report visits abroad who have been here less than ten years.

The totals of the two sexes show that the South Italians report the largest percentage who have made visits abroad, followed closely by the North Italians, while the smallest percentage is shown by the Russian Hebrews. The percentage in the United States under five years who report visits abroad is small compared with the percentage of the two following periods.

The following table shows the per cent of foreign-born employees reporting 1 or more visits abroad according to locality and race: Table 79.- Per cent of foreign-born employees reporting 1 or more visits abroad, by

locality and by race.

In the total industry 7.3 per cent of the foreign-born employees report 1 or more visits abroad. In New York City the proportion is 7.7 per cent, in Chicago it is 6.5 per cent, and in Baltimore it is 5.9 per cent. In the entire industry the South Italians show the largest proportion as having made visits abroad, and are closely followed by the North Italians. Both in Chicago and in New York City the North Italians show the largest proportion who have made visits abroad, and are closely followed by the South Italians. The Hebrews show in all 3 localities a proportion less than 5 per cent.

Out of a total of 4,680 persons reporting, nearly 60 per cent are over 14 years of age, while slightly less than 40 per cent are between the ages of 20 and 44. The native-born of foreign father, when compared with the foreign-born, predominate under the age of 13, but in every age group above that, excepting the one from 20 to 29, the foreign-born show the largest proportion.

The proportion of foreign-born males under 13 is smaller than the proportion of native-born of foreign father in the same age group, but in the periods of from 14 to 19 years the foreign-born proportion exceeds. Of the foreign-born males, 20.2 per cent are under 6, the Bohemians and Moravians, with 15.1 per cent, showing the smallest proportion in this age group. The Poles show 16 per cent from 6 to 13 years, the South Italians and Lithuanians less than 16 per cent each, while nearly 25 per cent each of the Bohemians and Moravians and Hebrews are in this age group. In the 30 to 44 year period, the Poles show the highest proportion, while in the period of 45 years or over, the Bohemians and Moravians show the largest proportions and the Lithuanians the smallest.

Referring to the tabulation for the female persons studied, it will be seen that the native-born of foreign father show a larger proportion of children under 6 years than do the foreign-born, while from 6 to 20 years the foreign-born proportion is larger in each group.

The Lithuanians show the largest proportion of females under 6 years of age, and the Bohemians and Moravians the smallest. The Bohemians and Moravians show the highest proportions in the period from 6 to 13 years, followed by the Poles and Hebrews. Among those who are from 20 to 29 years, the Lithuanians show the largest proportion and the Bohemians and Moravians the smallest. Less than 10 per cent each of the Hebrew, South Italian, Lithuanian, and Polish females are 45 years of age or over, while the Bohemians and Moravians show a proportion of 11.5 per cent.
