A golden harp with silver strings she bore ;
A wondrous hieroglyphick robe she wore,
In which all colours and all figures were,
That nature or that fancy can create,

That art can never imitate;
And with loose pride it wanton'd in the air.
In such a dress, in such a well-cloth'd dream,
She used, of old, near fair Ismenus' stream,
Pindar, her Thebap favourite, to meet;
A crown was on her head, and wings were on her feet.-Complaint.

Queen Elizabeth grants a patent to two Flemish merchants, Dollond and Cary, for the making of glass in England, during twenty-one years, upon condition to teach Englishmen, and to pay custom, 1567. These men being ignorant of the art, leased their privilege to certain Frenchmen, who broke the covenant, when the patent was rescinded in 1573. Before that time the glass was brought from Lorraine. In 1588 there were fifteen glasshouses in England.

Paul Hentzuer observes in his Itinerary, 1598, that the three days' amusement in Moorfields, during the Fair, were wrestling, shooting, and hunting. A number of rabbits also were loosed among the boys. The lord mayor, with twelve aldermen, attended the games as president.

He immediately retired to an apartment, and assumed a new character : his hair was cut close to the head, his hands and face were discoloured, his clothes were exchanged for the coarse and threadbare garments of a labourer, and a heavy wood-bill in his hand, completed the metamorphosis. John Penderell had the charge of Rochester, and the troop passed on as decoys.

Lo, the poor Indian! whose ontutor'd mind
Sees God in clouds, or hears him in the wind;
His soul proud science never taught to stray
Far as the solar walk, or milky way;
Yet simple nature to his hope has given,
Behind the cloud-topt hill an hambler heav'n.
Go, wiser thoa! and in thy scale of sense,
Weigh thy opinion against Providence.--Essay on Man.

Acts.

CICERO thanks the Senate with a speech on his return from exile.

The siege of Gloucester is raised by Essex on the 26th day of its investment. Charles received him at Newberry, on the 20th September, and disputed the passage. The victory of that day was justly claimed by the Parliament, and the Earl shortly after made his triumphal entry into the capital, the defence of which he compelled his rival, Sir Wil. liam Waller, to resign in his favour (after a long struggle), 9th October, 1643.

Charles II. and Richard Penderell, his guide, arrive about the turn of the day at Madeley, where they were secreted in a barn, belonging to Mr. Wolf, a catholic recusant, 1651. They returned at night to Boscobel House.

Cromwell's first Parliament assembles at Westminster, 1654. The speech explaining his policy occupied three solemn hours.

Five hundred and sixty-seven inhabitants of Cripplegate parish returned dead by the general infection for the week ending this day, 1665. Two days later, Evelyn rates the weekly mortality in London at 10,000. “What eye would not weep to see so many habitations uninhabited ; the poor sick not visited ; the hungry not fed; the grave not satisfied. Death stares us continually in the face in every infected person that passeth by us; in every coffin which.is hourly carried along the streets. The bells never cease to put us in mind of our mortality.”

Bishop Hacket (of Lichfield) to Sir Edward Bagot, 1667 : “My last proposition is to your noble lady : an organ is bespoken at £600 price, to be called The Ladies' Organ, because none but the honourable and most pious of that sex shall contribute to that sum."

Jonas Hanway, the pbilanthropist, dies, who introduced umbrellas. Temples have their sacred images, and we see what intluence they have always had over a great part of mankind. But, in truth, the ideas and images in inen's minds are the invisible powers that constantly govern them; and to these they all aniversally pay a ready submission,

Some, like merchants, venture trade abroad;
Others, like soldiers, armed in their stings,
Make boot upon the summer's velvet buds;
Which pillage they with merry march bring home
To the tent-royal of their emperor :
Who, busied in his majesty, surveys
The singing masons building roofs of gold ;
The civil citizens kneading up the honey :
The sad-ey'd justice, with his surly hum,
* Delivering up the lazy yawning drone.-State-Bees.
