Then straight commands, that at the warlike sound
Of trumpets loud and clarions be uprear'd
His mighty Standard ; that proud honour claim'd
Azazel as his right, a cherub tall;
Who forthwith from the glittering staff unfurld
The imperial ensign; which, full high advanc'd,
Shone like a meteor streaming to the wind,
With gems and golden lustre rich emblaz'd,
Seraphic arms and trophies; all the while
Sonorous metal blowing martial sounds.-Satan.

THE MUNDANE Epoch. The present is the 'sixth' historical day.

In this place may be noted, two events synchronal with the great 'mysteries ;' the destruction of Baotian Thebes, and removal of her inhabitants by Alexander, B.C. 335; and the occupation of Munychia, the principal fort of the Athenians, by a Macedonian garrison, when Antipater disfranchised 12,000 of the poorer citizens (the census returned 21,000), and settled them in Thrace, B.C. 322. The «sixth' day was called Iacchus (Cush), the name of the son of Jupiter and Ceres, when his image, bearing a torch, was carried from the Ceramicus (the ‘Père la Chaise' of Athens) to Eleusis, with dance and song by beat of kettle,

The veritable Saxon Chronicler thus speaks of William the Norman. “He set many deer-friths; and he made laws therewith, that whosoever should slay hart or hind, him man should blind. As he forbade the slaying of harts, so also did he of boars. So much he loved the high-deer, as if he had been their father. He also decreed about hares, that they should go free.” Lord Howe enters Philadelphia, 1777.

The famous Comet, tailed like a flaming lance,' through Boötes Ursa Major and Serpentis, was visible from this day, until the 5th of November, 1607. It had appeared before about Easter, 1305, in the Summer of 1456, and in 1531. In 1682 it returned again, at Christmas, 1758, and is awfully expected in less than, or about three years.

Admiring enter'd; and the w some praise,
And some the architect; his hand was known
In Heaven by many a tower'd structure high.
Men call'd him Mulciber; and how he fell
From Heaven they fabled, thrown by angry Jove
Sheer o'er the crystal battlements : from morn
To noon he fell, from noon to dewy eve,
A summer's day, and with the setting Sun
Dropt from the zenith like a falling star.- Pandemonium.

Satan except none higher sat: with grave
Aspéct he rose, and in his rising seem'd

What creatures there inhabit, of what mould.

If shape it might be call'd that shape had none
Distinguishable in member, joint, or limb;
Or substance might be call'd that shadow seem'd,
For each seem'd either: black it stood as Night,
Fierce as ten furies, terrible as Hell,
And shook a dreadful 'dart; what seem'd his head
The likeness of a kingly crown had on.
