And ever, against eating cares,
Lap me in soft Lydian airs
Married to immortal verse,
Such as the meeting soul may pierce,
In notes, with many a winding bout
Of linked sweetness long drawn out,
With wanton heed, and giddy cunning,
The melting voice through mazes running,
Untwisting all the chains that tie
The hidden soul of harmony.

The Numbers. The · Ennead,' or nine, is produced from the first perfect number, or three. Its names were Ocean, Prometheus, Horizon.

This day agrees with the first of the Armenian month Caghozi. The Faunalia upon the present day are kept according to Struvius. Menenius Agrippa meets the Plebeian seceders, encamped on the Mons Sacer near to Rome, and delivers to them there the memorable apologue of the belly and the members, B. C. 493.–See Shakspeare.

A great frost mentioned by Matthew Paris began upon this day, which continued 2 months and 10 days, 1150. Both horse and foot passed over the Thames. In that year all the prelates in council were shut up by King Stephen, for refusing to crown his son ; more remarkable for the appearance of Gratian's twenty-four years' labour-the “ Decretals.”

FORTUNE THEATRE. The first regular dramatic Theatre in the City' was destroyed by fire, Sunday, 1621. This square and spacious building stood between Whitecross-street and Golding-lane in Cripplegate, and cost its late proprietor, “Ned Alleyn," with the grounds, £1,320. Within two years she lifted her head again “ far fairer.” It appears to have been first opened about the 25th of July, 1600, by the Earl of Nottingham's servants. The model was framed upon Shakspeare's theatre, the Globe, then new-erected, with a pit, boxes, and “ two-penny rooms." Alleyn retired from the stage to Dulwich in 1617.

LORD CLARENDON. The historian of the Rebellion passed the last six years of his life in exile, the former three at Montpelier, where he finished that splendid monument of his genius and impartiality. His “Essays” belong to the language : they express the man, showing his unfitness for a station, where integrity and decency caught no reflection from the court. Luxury is the great traitor (reformer) in states.

The Muses. These are the seven wandering and visible stars who by their just gradations of tone, from magnitude, celerity, and distance, compose (with Vesta and Luna) the Universal Chorus. Saturn is called hypaté (the highest), and the Moon, neaté (the lowest) in the joint symphony. }

These delights if thou canst give, Mirth, with thee I mean to live. -Milton.

A voice as of the cherub-choir,
Gales from blooming Eden bear,
And distant warblings lessen on my ear,
That lost in long futurity expire.
Fond impious man I think'st thou yon sanguine cloud,
Raised by thy breath, has quench'd the orb of day!
To-morrow be repairs the golden food,
And warms the nations with redoubled ray.

There he arriving, round about doth fly,
From bed to bed, from one to t'other border;
And takes survey, with curious busy eye,
Of every flower and herb there set in order ;
Now this, now that, he tasteth tenderly,
Yet none of them he rudely doth disorder,
Ne with his feet their silken leaves deface ;
But pastures on the pleasures of each place.-Spenser's Clarion.

Ah, Ignorance ! soft salutary power
Prostrate with filial reverence I adore.
Oh, say, successful dost thou still oppose
Thy leaden ægis 'gainst our ancient foes ?
Still stretch, tenacious of thy right divine,
The masssy sceptre o'er thy slumbering line ??
If any spark of wit's delusive ray
Break out, and flash a momentary day,
With damp, cold touch forbid it to aspire,
And huddle up in fogs the dangerous fire.--Hymn.
