Il serait difficile de retrouver ici le Bacchus, fils de Jupiter et de Sémélée, dont la jeunesse, la grâce et la beauté sont les caractères distinctifs ; c'est cependant le même personnage encore reconnaissable par la longueur de sa chevelure et par le diadème ou bandeau qui entoure sa tête : il est ici représenté lors de sa conquête de l'Inde. Souvent dans ce cas les anciens lui ont donné une longue barbe, une large tunique traînante et un ample manteau, qui tourne plusieurs fois autour du corps. Cet habillement était celui des souverains de cette contrée, et c'est sans doute par ce motif qu'on a écrit sur le bord du manteau l'inscription CAPAANAПAAAOC, nom que portèrent plusieurs rois des Assyriens; mais la forme des caractères est bien postérieure au travail de la statue, cette inscription paraît gravée sous le règne des Antonins, tandis que la statue est antérieure à Phidias.

Cette statue, en marbre pentélique, fut découverte en 1761, à Prata Porzia, près de Frascati; le bras droit est une restauration moderne, ainsi que les extrémités du nez et des lèvres. Elle a été gravée par Morel et Châtillon.

THE INDIAN, OR BEARDED BACCHUS,

CALLED,

SARDANAPALUS.

It is be difficult here to discern Bacchus, the son of Jupiter and Semele, in whom youth, grace, and beauty, are the distinctive characteristics; yet it is the same individual, distinguishable by the length of his hair, and by the diadem, or fillet, around his head: he is here represented during his conquest of India. The ancients have often, in this case, represented him with a long beard, an ample trailing tunic, and a full mantle wrapped several times round the body: This was the dress of the Monarchs of that region; and, no doubt it is for this reason, that, on the edge of the mantle, is written, the inscription CAPAANAIAAAOC, a name borne by several of the Assyrian Kings; but the shape of the letters is far posterior to the workmanship of the statue: this inscription appears to have been engraved under the reign of the Antonines, whilst the statue is anterior to Phidias.

This statue, which is in Pentelic marble, was discovered in 1761, at Prata Porzia, near Frascati; the right arm is a modern restoration, as also the tips of the nose and lips.

It has been engraved by Morel and Châtillon.
